Online shopping is a recent phenomenon in India but shoppers in India are almost at par with their global peers when it comes to their shopping habits. This is because of the growing popularity of the technologies like smartphones, tablets and social media.
Recently, a survey was conducted by PwC in which it was found out that thirty-four percent people make their purchases online on a monthly basis with global average being thirty-three percent. While footwear, clothing, household appliances, consumer electronics, DVDs, books are top categories of product in online shopping, shoppers in India are now opting to buy product categories like homeware, furniture, DIY (do-it-yourself) and grocery items online, which were usually bought from a brick-and-mortar store.
Online shoppers in India believe in selecting from abundance. The number of online retailers, which Indians shopped from in the last year is more than 10. The number is way above the developed countries of the world where people usually restrict themselves to 2-5 retailers.
However, there is a very common saying about Indian retail customers that they have a ‘can’t touch, don’t buy’ mentality. But this mentality of people is changing with an increasing drift towards online shopping. The e-commerce business in India jumped by more than eighty percent in 2013 and this impetus will possibly continue for next 5-6 years.
According to the report, the main reason for the buyers to purchase online over the brick-and-mortar shops are more choices, better service, deals and discounts, stock availability, lower price, broadband internet, Flipkart and ebay coupon codes, improved online banking services, cash on delivery and home delivery of the product and convenience.
In fact the economic slowdown and spiraling inflation have failed to create an impact on the buyers who are visiting retail stores more, but simultaneously are giving more and more preference to purchasing items online. Mall owners and shopkeepers are feeling the heat because they scramble to stand up to the increasing competition from the online retailers.
